AQRS Standards & Inspection Methodology

A structured framework for assessing roof condition, performance, and certification consistency across the United Kingdom.

The AQRS certification framework has been developed to support consistency, accountability, and professionalism within roofing assessment and reporting.

Every roof inspection and certification follows a structured methodology, ensuring that findings are recorded, graded, and reported in a clear and standardised format.

This approach supports contractors, homeowners, insurers, and property stakeholders by providing a recorded and verifiable assessment of roof condition and completed works.

Condition Grading System

All roofs inspected under the AQRS framework are assigned a condition grade to reflect their observed state and performance at the time of inspection.
Grade A – Excellent
Roof is in optimal condition with no visible defects requiring attention.

Grade B – Good
Minor signs of wear present, with no significant defects affecting performance.

Grade C – Fair
Noticeable deterioration or defects present. Maintenance or repair is recommended.

Grade D – Poor
Significant defects identified. Remedial works are required to prevent further deterioration.

Urgency Classification

Each inspection also includes an urgency level to indicate the recommended timeframe for action.

Low – No immediate action required. Monitor over time.

Medium – Works recommended in the near future to prevent deterioration.

High – Urgent attention recommended to address potential risk of structural or internal impact.

AQRS Certification Types

AQRS operates two primary certification types:

Roof Condition Certificate (RCC)
Issued following a detailed inspection of an existing roof, producing a formal record of observed condition, identified defects, and recommended actions. Certificates are valid for 12 months, with public verification limited to certificate number, status, and expiry information.

Certificate of Works (COW)
Issued following completion of roofing works or repairs. This certificate provides a recorded confirmation that works have been submitted and approved through the AQRS certification process.

Inspection Methodology

All AQRS inspections follow a structured assessment process:

• Identification of roof type, covering, and approximate age
• Visual inspection of accessible areas
• Recording of observed defects, wear, and deterioration
• Assessment of overall condition and performance
• Assignment of condition grade and urgency level
• Documentation of findings and recommendations

This process is designed to support consistency across inspections and provide a reliable record for future reference and verification.

Independent Verification & Record Keeping

All AQRS certificates are recorded within a centralised register and can be verified via the AQRS website.

This helps improve transparency and reduce the risk of misrepresentation by providing a clear record of certified inspections and completed works.

AQRS operates as an independent organisation providing a structured certification system, with the objective of supporting higher standards and accountability within the roofing industry.

Supporting Roofing Standards. Certifying Accountability.
